[Jews in Oradea] “Gheorghe Sincai” Library, from Oradea, Romania, unfolded in October 2009 a photography exhibition which commemorated the cultural heritage left into the memory of our city by the important and prosperous Jewish community in the years prior to WWII. This moment is highly symbolic: 1944-2009.

The Waivoda immediately agreed and soon afterwards 15,000 Albanians, with their belongings and beasts, crossed the Danube and came to live in Walachia..."The most important period of the Albanian community in Romania extended from the late 19th to the early years of the 20th century where, in 1844, the Albanian patriot Naum Veqillarxhi developed the first Albanian alphabet.

Tom Wilson and Milos Jovanovic have just released 100 To Watch, a sort of directory of the new wave of Romanian art. They made 1,000 limited-edition copies and an accompanying website. Tom sent us 20 copies of the book, so if you want one, email the UK office, but you must be able to come and pick it up because there’s no way we’re shipping it to you overseas.

[Jews in Oradea] 1735 - The 1735 census shows that the Jews from Orasul Nou (The new City) and Olosig were mostly of Czech descend and, to a lesser extent, of Polish origin. These two mixed sources of the Jewish immigration carried inside them the future separation of the Jewish community from the second-half of the next century.

[TravelPod.com Recent Updates] Somewhere it has to go wrong you would say…After a day hiking in the mountains and a camp party with a huge Romanian family who didn’t speak any English (lot’s of fun, huge camp fire, loud traditional Balkan music and dancing again) we had to take the ferry to cross the river. The crew wanted us to park in a normal car spot and as many of you know our van is not the kind of normal sized car…I think Angelique did very well but unfortunately she scratched the car of two ladies and that the whole ferry and surrounding heard loud and clear!

We left Bucharest Saturday morning, heading for the village of Bran and it's castle, touted as Dracula's castle, but not really. The 16th century prince Vlad the Impaler later became associated with the Dracula legend because of his bloodlust, but his castle is actually elsewhere.
