[Un Viaje...] Reflection on Romania: . Sitting on the bench, I was surrounded by kids, asking for money, asking for a bite of my lunch, touching my sleeve, making sad faces. I told them to stop in Spanish, which they found hilarious, repeating the word back to themselves and laughing. After a minute of this, an old man sitting next to me stood up, shaking his finger in the face of the children and telling them to go away in Romanian. Finally, he stood up and with the assistance of a younger woman, chased the children away. I thanked them in Romanian (one of the few words I was able to learn). The woman pointed to the children, and said in broken English, "I am sorry." The funny thing is that, as I walked to catch my train, one of the young girls who had laughed hardest when I told her to "quit it" in Spanish walked over and shook my hand in a truce.
