My Romania > Este-Sudeste: Jewish Romania: fading memories
[Este-Sudeste] It may be not so strange, in any case, as it's logical that in small rural spots, where both streets and non-wooden buildings are relatively recent phenomena, the history doesn't make such a permanent imprint as medieval towns that Jewish helped to build and get relevance in Spain. Jewish peasant communities, inexistent in Western Europe (where most of kingdoms forbade land ownership by Jews) were frequent in Eastern Europe until Second World War, but their memory is probably disappearing, as there are little descendants to keep memories alive on the spot (those who weren't killed have fled) and there is no buildings, no "stones" to be cherished by history-of-art lovers.

Today the experience of exile ought to bring us closer to each other, but our contact with them, like that of last evening, only revealed to what extent we remained attached to our land archetype implanted in the Parisian milieu.
[Eurozine articles] Eurozine - Advanced profligate capitalism - Eurozine Review: Based on unique documents from German, Lithuanian, Belarusian and Polish archives, Sakalouski reconstructs German policy in occupied Belarus in 1918, the activity of BNR government in German exile, and the unsuccessful efforts of the young Belarusian state to be recognized by the great European powers between 1918 and 1925.

In many respects theatre practitioners, historians and archaeologists are locked together in an interpretative nexus - responsible for the generation of material and knowledge and for the transmission of this knowledge in a way which can be complicating, truthful, useful and enjoyable or manipulative and nationalistic.

Even if you find ONE case of a rabbi specifically behaving like you describe, which I have yet to see clearly documented without question, it still does not mean they all did!
[H-Review - Recent Reviews] H-Net Reviews: Such an approach highlights regional disparity of German policies on Ukraine: western areas suffered far higher death rates due to both the Germans' rapid seizure of these areas, which forestalled any attempts at evacuation, and a radical Ukrainian nationalist movement that only fell under Soviet power following the annexation of eastern Poland in 1939 and therefore had deep enough roots in society to survive Sovietization. Kruglov also presents some truly staggering numbers: during the last six months of 1941, Germany and its allies murdered 85,000 Jews per month or, even more startling, 2,600 per day.

While it would be simplistic to argue that Russia was helplessly pushed by Wilhelm’s incompetence and belligerence into the arms of France and from there stumbled into uneasy association with Britain, it is difficult to argue as Durnovo does that Russia consciously sought out a British alliance that ignored its true interests or that Britain actively cultivated Russia as part of a grand plan to encircle Germany as Wilhelm came to believe.

Later I met with Bulgarian bloggers for an interesting public discussion about new media, before leaving for the airport and a flight to Bucharest.

[Chrisy58's Weblog] Who is Kevin McDonald? « Chrisy58's Weblog: A major factor easing the defection of Jews from the radical left (in addition to concerns about anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union and Soviet support for the Arabs against Israel in the Cold War) was the leftist critique of Zionism. Mark Rudds comments, quoted in my article are typical of the leftist critique: Israel is “militarized, racist, religio-nationalist, corporate, riven with so many internal splits and hatreds that only the existence of a perpetual enemy keeps the nation from exploding.” Whereas Rudd remained a leftist, Jews deserted the left in droves when it became impossible to reconcile their leftism with their commitment to Jewish ethno-nationalism and the state of Israel.
