[Study Abroad - Thomas Buckley] Study Abroad - Thomas Buckley » Blog Archive » Bucharest: 10/7 - 10/11: From what I have heard, the Romanian people associate this area with the evils of their previous dictator; they want nothing to do with him (in fact, the Romanian people wanted to tear down the Palace of the Parliament after the dictator was overthrown).

[wine-pages.com] The wines of Romania: There are some terrific wines here, though as Conrelia says "We plan a more premium range, based on blends and not single varietals, but only once we have understood all of our terroirs and vine to soil matching, and once the vines are really mature." Everything is hand-harvested for now, but they plan to buy harvesting machines so that grapes can be gathered more quickly at optimum ripeness.

Romanian ...: The in situ installations by Dan Perjovschi, Lia Perjovschi, Mona Vatamanu and Florin Tudor, the works by Mircea Cantor and Ciprian Muresan, and the text by Ion Grigorescu, all of which have been made specifically for this exhibition, are a kind of response, a direct reaction to the question we asked about the significance and topicality, obscured during the Ceausescu era, of the history of Dadaism. This is why the exhibition features works illustrating the paradoxes of the communist system: for this is part of the context for the reception of the problem of the early-20th-century avant-gardes in Romania.

[Artipedia - Your pulse on contemporary art] LOW-BUDGET MONUMENTS: The Romanian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale ...: Cristi Pogacean’s ironic Obelisk and his powerful rendition of a recent hostage crisis, where a group of Romanian journalists have been abducted in Iraq, Mona Vatamanu and Florin Tudor’s discussion of architecture in its dual processes of construction and destruction, of colonizing space and simultaneously making entropy visible, from the perspective of a performative monument, Victor Man’s treatment of the residues of nationalism inscribed on the façade of the pavilion and his ‘Monument to Victor Man’, intersecting the private space of confession and a phantasmal public space – all works propose modes of rethinking the public place or role of art. In different ways, they propose degrees-zero from which new monuments can be built, strategies of the monument based on the logic of counter-action.

[BBC Blog Network] BBC - Mark Mardell's Euroblog: A magical place: No, I am not assuming that all farmers are Roma, (I have lived in a country close to Romania and I can certanly tell the difference between a gypsy peasant and a Romanian peasant), but very often when speaking of Romanian peasant life there is a tendency to choose a gypsy family (something done by Mark himself a few months ago and noted by unhappy Romanians reading his material).
