My Romania > Visiting Oradea

[A Work in Progress] For a few weeks this summer, some of the orphans went to their home villages to visit their families.  Not all the children were invited by a family member to visit and I know it was hard on the kids who remained at the orphanage.  So I decided to have a few special days of fun for them.  The kids love to visit Oradea (a city about an hour away) so we made several fun trips into the city.  We were able to go to the zoo, some parks, the mall and even the circus.  It was a lot of fun for all of us.

[We Travel World] Unu steaua is our style! Oradea!: We checked into what our lonely planet called Oradea’s last budget hotel, Hotel Parc. When we arrived at Hotel Parc we saw a plaque on the outside of the building that said Hotel Parc was actually a historic monument and was once a palace in the 1700s.

[GlobalPost] Animal Abuse | Zoo Review | International Tourism: Just because two mature Asian elephants only have a tiny enclosure, with no natural surfaces, barely any shade, get gawked at all day by sticky-fingered passersby’s, have no enrichment, barely enough room to move and feet and skeletal problems from lack of natural movement - how can you say that San Antonio Zoo is bad? Look at the facts people - if they were at a sanctuary they would have acres and acres to roam in, a heated night barn, others of their own kind to associate with , care and kindness and a view, natural surroundings - grass, trees a large waterhole to frolic in.

[MinnPost - High-quality journalism for people who care about Minnesota -- News and Analysis] MinnPost - Top 10: world's worst zoos: I've lived in Kiev for 14 years and can confirm that the Kiev zoo provides a pretty awful habitat for most of the animals that remain there. But the popular speculation surrounding the numerous animal deaths and poisonings is that there are individuals or groups within the hugely corrupt city administration who want to relocate the zoo as it sits on a valuable piece of real estate.

[Strange Maps] 341 - Hungariform Crossword For Magyarophone Cartophiles | Strange ...: as long as Milosevic is not reincarnated in Hungary, it's a joke...But considering there are almost no more Poles in Vilnius, Grodno and Lviv, almost no more Germans in eastern Pomerania, Silesia and Mazovia, almost no more Jews between Berlin and Moscow, almost no more Armenians in Turkey, etc...it's some kind of a chance there is a still significant number of Magyars around Hungary...And of course they deserve the right to preserve their language and culture, and Hungary can help them for sure, but why with "the so unfair Trianon" in mind ? ( The German leaders of the 1930's always had in mind " the so unfair Versailles" and we know how they managed it...).Fight for the rights of Magyarophones rather than for Magna Hungaria.

[ACUM.TV] “The toughest job you'll ever love” - interview with Natalie ...: NM: For now, I am looking forward to going back to teach in Brusturoasa.  There will be time to see if there is a family that I might stay with or a home there before September.  The community is supporting the efforts of the Peace Corps and my work there and so I am hopeful that there will be a return there.  Patience is key in these situations.  This summer, I had planned to visit other cities and towns in Romania and I am doing that.  Bucharest, Targoviste, Oradea, Suceava, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, Sighisoara, the towns in between, and so many other places around the country.  I hope to be able to get to Budapest and Sofia if there is time.  But there is always next summer for that, too.  I feel that it’s more important that I see all of Romania that I can first, as my students, some of whom have never been there themselves yet, would love to hear about it.  For the new school year, we will continue our good work together-reading, writing, and speaking in English about all of our experiences and with the help of a gift of more new books that were just delivered and the training that I have undertaken to prepare to be a teacher here, well, I hope that we have a year that is just as successful and rich in knowledge, humor, and growing together.

[memoari/memorialistică/回忆录] Experiences, the first set of good-byes, and a class picture: so delicious though.  The weather is once again ridiculously hot.  I hate this bipolar weather.  Later on, I went to Oradea’s Baile Felix with Klara, Xeni, her boyfriend who I can’t remember the name of, Karin, Szidi, Orsi, Xeni’s two neighbors, and Klara and Karin’s grandfather, who I’ve nicknamed Hungarian Jack Sparrow.  The Baile Felix is a waterpark on the outerpart of Oradea, and it has a grand total of 5 slides (melded together into one structure), and a bunch of thermal baths.  Most of the baths were around 34-38 celsius, which is really really hot.  The only one that was cooler (at 24-28 degrees celsius) was the tidal pool.  I had so many near-death experiences that day.  I got dunked several times by Xeni’s boyfriend and Jack Sparrow, who liked to work as a team.  It was fun though.  We didn’t get back until pretty late (which means 10 p.m. here).
